Path to Havasupai
MAY 2025, Medium Format fujifilm Velvia 50
If there is a heaven, it probably looks like Havasupai Gardens.
The human eye can see more shades of green than any other color, and Velvia color positive film is magic when shooting landscapes at the right time of day. It really did look this green in person.
North Kaibob Redwall
May 2025, Medium Format Kodak Ektar 100
Looking back following a descent from the North rim, taken just before crossing the Redwall Bridge (next photo). This picture dates just 2 months before a lightning strike ignited the Dragon Bravo fire, which burned a large section of the North Kaibob forest, destroyed the historic North Rim Lodge, and burned a significant way into the canyon, to beyond where this photo was taken. At the time of writing (September 2025), the fire is still ablaze and mostly contained.
Redwall Bridge
may 2025, Medium Format Kodak ektar 100
Looking back up the North Kaibob trail from just across the Redwall Bridge. This bridge escaped the Dragon Bravo fire with severe damage, but remained standing.
Black Bridge
may 2025, Medium Format fujifilm velvia 50
While on the topic of bridges.. this one was something else. The Kaibob Trail Suspension Bridge, or "Black Bridge", was built in 1928 by a team of engineers and Havasupai tribesmen, who carried all of the materials down from the rim of the canyon by hand and mule. The cables themselves, which span 550ft and weigh over a ton, took 42 people to carry.
This feat of engineering is a sight to behold. We spent an afternoon on the banks of the Colorado here, looking up at this bridge (among other sights) and wishing that I had downloaded more Odesza to my phone before descending into the canyon.
Additional angles of this bridge are available on the prints page.
Canyon Tabletop
may 2025, Medium Format Kodak Gold 200
Ascending south up the South Kaibob trail, just before reaching The Tipoff. We went on to take the Tonto Trail over to Havasupai, and then the Bright Angel trail out on the final day.
Ribbon Falls
may 2025, Medium Format Kodak Gold 200
It wasn't all desert and rocks in the Grand Canyon. Ribbon falls is a rich oasis between Phantom Ranch and Cottonwood campgrounds, just before The Box (if you're traveling south). We made this excursion on the first day, and at the time I distinctly remember saying aloud, "This is the most beautiful place I've ever been."
Canyon Moonrise
May 2025, Medium Format fujifilm velvia 50
From a hike up the Bright Angel trail as the sun rose on our final day. Shot with a polarizing filter.
Arches Sunrise
march 2024, Medium Format fujifilm 400
An early morning in Arches National park. Took this photo when I was between jobs and road tripping across the country.
There are a few more Arches photos available if this one isn't quite your flavor, but it'd be a bit redundant to have you scrolling through all of them here. You can find the rest on the Prints page.
Arch Waves
march 2024, Medium Format Kodak Gold 200
While driving out of Arches, I passed a large format photographer setting up his gear at this spot. I pulled over to chat and ended up setting up my camera, too.
White Sands Flowers
march 2024, Medium Format Kodak Gold 200
Managed to make my way into White Sands National Park just before they closed at sunset. Most of the landscape shots didn't turn out with the lighting (skill issue). However, this one did. I haven't been able to figure out what kind of flowers these are, as they look to be past their prime bloom, with their main stalk/stem seemingly dying. They made a beautiful subject for this sunsetting background.
Chicago Flowers
march 2024, Medium Format Kodak Gold 200
When you see a neon sign like this, sometimes you just need to pull over and get the camera out. I like this one. It would probably look good in a frame. Maybe someone here would think so, too.
Fireworks over Boston
July 2021, Medium Format Kodak Gold 200
This 4-second exposure was taken from the Boston University bridge on the 4th of July in 2021. This year marked the return of the fireworks following cancellation in 2020 due to the panemic. I showed up about an hour before the fireworks were scheduled to start, and the bridge was packed. Countless photographers had staked out a spot with their tripods to shoot this scene. I was the only one with a brick of a medium format film camera shooting among a shoulder-to-shoulder sea of digital setups. The detail contained in this photo is something else.
Winter Moonrise
February 2021, 35mm Kodak Gold 200
This photo was taken at the snowy tundra of the summit of Camel's Hump in Vermont. It was one of those clear, cold days where taking the gloves off to operate the camera merited serious consideration. These two rime ice-coated trees framed the rising moon perfectly. Worth the cold fingers on the hike down.
La Station du Faubourg
May 2022, 35mm Kodak Gold 200 (Alternate on Portra 400)
Something about this photo tickles a deep part of my brain. The alignment! The straight lines! The sharp but geometrically balanced angles! The warm color tones! It all comes together to give the impression of something out of a Wes Anderson movie. I liked this scene so much I returned the next morning to take the picture again, this time on a different film stock. Both photos strike a chord with me, so both are available in print form for whatever color balance speaks to you.
Anyways, background: This scene was captured in the town of Sainte-Annes-des-Monts while on an expedition seeking out late-season snow in Gaspesie National Park. I spent the mornings hiking and skiing the Chic Chocs, the afternoons scoping town and the surrounding reserves for photo-worthy scenes, and the nights sleeping in my car. It was a 22 hour drive round-trip. I stopped at numerous gas stations along the way. This one was my favorite.
Desert Facade
April 2022, 35mm Kodak Ektar 100
Speaking of visually pleasing geometries, this one activates that same region of my anterior medial prefrontal cortex. The sharp lines of the house balance nicely against the flowers on the tree. Taken in Arizona.
Boston Facade
June 2021, 35mm Kodak Gold 200
Summer 2021 marked a brutal wildfire season for the Western US. The smoke frequently made its way to the east coast. These days marked a sky so hazy that you could look directly at the sun, which changed from white to orange to red as it got lower in the sky.
On this hazy day, I took a walk through Back Bay to photograph some of the brownstones. I was particularly drawn to those with ivy or plants creeping up the bricks. I'm no fan of wildfires or smoky skies, but it does make for some diffuse lighting. A few other photos from this walk are also available.
Fall Canopy
October 2023, Medium Format Cinestill 400D
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood...
Rock Springs Canyon
December 2023, 35mm Kodak Ektar 100
Taken just through a Jackson Hole sidecountry gate, on a south-eastern aspect looking down into the the Rock Springs Bowl. Best turns of the trip during a historically dry early season.
Sunny Tetons
December 2023, 35mm Kodak Ektar 100
Peaks from left to right: Mt. Owen, Grand Teton, Middle Teton, and South Teton framed on a cold clear day from Driggs, Idaho. This photo was taken from Grand Targhee resort on the north face of Mary's Nipple (a real name. Le Tetons, Now!) following a ~30 minute bootpack. Quite the spot to break for lunch. Alternate available in a portrait orientation if you really want it- but this one's better.
Lighthouse Hotel
August 2023, 35mm Fujifilm Superia 400
This photo comes from one of my favorite bando's I've explored. While waiting for a ferry over to Block Island for a soccer tournament, I couldn't resist searching for a way inside this abandoned hotel in Narragansett, RI. The years of vines growing over what used to be the pool room, enabled by the collapsed roof, are peak nature reclamation.
The blighted Lighthouse Hotel closed permanently in 2015. It is slated for demolition at an unspecified future date as of November 2023.
Alternate available in horizontal orientation.
Lakes Region Facility
August 2023, 35mm Fujifilm Superia 400
The sprawling Lakes Region Facility in Laconia, NH included a minimum security prison and transitional facility until the site was shuttered in 2009. Nowadays, you can walk among the buildings and, with a sharp enough eye, make your way through the barbed-wire fence and into the abandoned prison itself. It's generally well-preserved but is slowly falling victim to low-effort graffiti and destructive vandals.
Azorian Canopy
June 2023, Medium Format kodak Ektar 100
Taken from the center of tree that split into 8 (!) separate trunks on a hike through a temperate mixed forest on the island of São Miguel, Portugal. These wide-angle tree canopy shots are quickly becoming my favorite.
The shadows have been lightened slightly for better display in print form.
Azorian Swimmer
June 2023, Medium Format kodak Ektar 100
One of the sparse prints available that contain a subject. Who is this mysterious swimmer? And why is his back so well-defined?
Azorian Arch
June 2023, Medium Format kodak Ektar 100
Taken in the gardens of Parque Terra Nostra in Furnas, Portugal.
Azorian Waterfall II
June 2023, Medium Format kodak Ektar 100
A second waterfall, sans swimmer, on the island of São Miguel, Portugal.
Rawhide Motel
December 2023, 35mm Fujifilm Superia 400
While in Jackson WY, I spent an evening strafing the small city and taking photos of every neon sign I could find (there's a bountiful selection). This one wasn't the shot I expected to come out the best, but here we are. I think there's something in there about managing expectations.
A friend mentioned that the tree branches extending to the lower left of the sign look like a skeleton's hand walking along the shadowed ridge line, and now I can't unsee it.
Zakim Bridge Long Exposure
October 2023, Medium Format Cinestill 400D
A long exposure overlooking Zakim bridge in Boston. Additional prints from this late night photo scout include long exposures of the Paramount Theater and the Appleton Bridge over Storrow Drive.
Acadian Fog
July 2021, 35mm Unknown film
A wide angle shot capturing a foggy day along the coast of Acadia National Park in Maine. This road trip was a formative experience that cemented my love for New England and Palace (@wearepalace).
Spring Flowers
April 2021, 35mm Unknown film
Taken in Dorchester, MA of all places, on a spring day at the South end of Buttonwood St. Also available in a closer-cropped vertical orientation.
Somer Storms
February 2022, 35mm Fujifilm Superia 800
Super grainy handheld night shot on an evening following a respectable storm cycle in Somerville. The only sounds on the street were the snowy crunch of my boots along Broadway and the click of my camera.
Glacier Gorge
OCTOBER 2022, MEDIUM FORMAT KODAK EKTAR 100
Taken on the Glacier Gorge trail en route to...
Sky Pond
October 2022, Medium Format Kodak Gold 200
...Sky Pond in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
Cody Bowl
December 2023, 35mm Kodak Ektar 100
Facing west towards the Cody Bowl adjacent to Jackson Hole. Looking out into tasty terrain like this makes me think about how I really need to get avalanche training certified. Alternate available in landscape orientation.
Corbet's Signpost
December 2023, 35mm Kodak Ektar 100
I did not drop a line into Corbets this day- definitely because it was simply closed and not for any other reason. The Ektar colors shine on this one. Alternate available in portrait orientation.
Idyllic Morning
September 2022, 35mm Kodak Ektar 100
Taken on the back fringe of summer in a top secret Vermont location. Truman, I'm still thinking about those breakfast potatoes.
Franconia Ridge
October 2021, 35mm Kodak Gold 200
Following 4 hours of fitful sleep at a makeshift campsite, we tackled this loop and drank craft kombucha at the summit. I don't even care how crunchy that sounds. It was amazing.
Note: There are some visual artifacts from a poor developing process on this image- see the two faint dark traces above the horizon line. This negative was developed at a local lab in Somerville and then scanned at home as one of the first rolls through my home scanner. All of the other shots from this role have similar visual defects (I no longer use this lab). I'm including it as a print option because I love the composition of the ridge line and maybe you don't mind a little extra character. New England needs some representation among the mountain prints here. If you want cleaner mountains for your wall, I have those too.
Mt. Superior
February 2023, 35mm Fujifilm C200
Sun cresting on the south face of Mt. Superior. One of those ominous ski lines you can't help but crane your neck at and wonder. Maybe next year...
